Health Screening

Dog and cat health screening

Detect problems in elderly dogs and cats early to ensure your pet stays happier for longer.  Call us on 023 8040 6215 about Health Screening for your pet.

We know that aging predisposes dogs and cats to certain diseases. However, early detection of such problems through regular screening can allow us to control these diseases better resulting in your pet staying happier for longer.
We recommend starting this monitoring in middle age so we can pick up any changes before too much damage has occurred. Testing yearly in middle age patients is comparable to seeing your doctor every 4-5 years. Your pet’s yearly vaccination and examination are a good time to perform these checks. Call and talk us today to find out more about senior cat and dog screening and make an appointment to keep your pet healthy.
If your pet is a member of the Adelaide Pet Care Plan annual routine screening is half price once they have reached the required age.

About our Health Screening Service for cats

Senior Cat Health Check programme

Screening for any illness that may be developing in an apparently healthy individual has become common practice in human medicine. As a cat gets older it is common for some of their organs to start to work less effectively. Detecting these changes at an early stage, before your cat is showing any signs of illness, may enable you to slow down the deterioration and improve the quality and length of your cat's life. To detect these changes we run a screening program for older cats called the 'Senior Cat Health Check' program.

Early detection

The following simple-to-perform checks will help us to detect the early stages of a number of illnesses and can be performed as a 'Senior Cat Health Check' health check.

Overactive thyroid

Kidney disease

Heart disease

High blood pressure

Diabetes

Dental problems

Arthritis

Tumours

Physical examination to check for signs of tumours, dental disease, heart disease, thyroid disease, arthritis and other problems.
Blood pressure - measured ultrasonically. Raised blood pressure can cause sudden blindness, kidney failure and fatal blood clots. It may be treated simply with tablets, in addition to investigations to find its cause.
Urine specific gravity is a good indicator of early kidney disease. Kidney disease is the second biggest killer of elderly cats. The visible symptoms of kidney failure do not occur until about 65% of the kidneys tissue has been damaged. Treatments including tablets and diet changes can double the expected life span of a cat with kidney disease.
Urine dipstick tests will help detect diabetes, bladder problems and kidney problems.
Weight check Unexplained weight loss may be an early indicator of a number of diseases including an overactive thyroid, tumours, diabetes and kidney disease.
